Introduction
As a part of the Taxation Laws Act, the Pradhan Mantri Gareeb Kalyan Yojana (PMGKY) was launched by the Government of India and it came into effect in the year 2016. The initial aim of the PMG Kalyan Yojana was to make sure no one tries to avoid paying tax, declare any kind of unaccounted money, or avoid paying any kind of penalty or criminal prosecution.
Pradhan Mantri Gareeb Kalyan Yojana 2024
The PM Gareeb Kalyan Yojana or package was extended due to the outbreak of coronavirus and it is all in one relief package or yojana of Rs. 1.70 Lakh Crore for all the poor or needy people to help them fight this battle against the coronavirus.
The extension of this Yojana was announced back in March 2020 when the outbreak of covid happened to all the people who required food and to give them money in hand so that they don’t face any difficulties in buying the essentials and supplements for themselves.
The objective of the PMGKY
The initial aim of launching the PM Gareeb Kalyan Yojana was to bring back all the black money which had been hidden and provide protection from the government to all the people who were avoiding paying tax.
With a tax rate of 49.9% with the PM Gareeb Kalyan Yojana, the government tried opening a window for all the people who avoided paying taxes to disclose their unaccounted income. The goal was to remove income inequality from the country.

With the extension for this scheme in 2020 was announced for the relief packages for all the needy people during the tough times of covid-19. The extension aimed to provide support to all the small businesses and employees with low wages. Under this scheme, the government provided the EPF employees a total of 12% wages and EPF and EPS employees the total wage of 12% which in total was 24% of the monthly wages.
And that’s when Ms. Nirmala Sitharama the Minister of Union Finance and Corporate Affairs announced the relief packages of Rs. 1.70 Lakh Crore under the PMGKY.
Details of the PMGKY
This scheme/yojana aims to provide benefits to all the sections of society:
- Urban and Rural poor or needy people
- Migrant workers
- Women
- Farmers
The government under this scheme tried identifying the sections or areas which were affected the most by the outbreak of the coronavirus.

And by seeing all the results the government came out with several schemes under the PM Gareeb Kalyan Yojana. Some of the important ones were:
- To all the women who had the Jhan Dhan accounts Rs. 500 was transferred in the Cash Transfer Scheme.
- To all the health workers the insurance of health was given which included sanitation workers, Doctors, Asha workers, nurses.
- To all the poor provision of food, grains were provided to all the people from urban and rural areas.
Components of the PMGKY
- More than 80 Crore Indians were covered under this scheme.
- The cash transfer scheme where they received Rs. 500.
- An insurance scheme of health was provided for all the Health Workers who fought against CoronaVirus.
- To all the farmers advance payments were made through the PM KISAN scheme.
- To all the senior citizens of the country, support was provided by the government by transferring Rs. 1000 for 3 months.
- Free gas cylinders and LPG were provided to all the poor families.

After the extension of this scheme in 2020, it was initially planned to continue for three months but it got extended till November 2020. This yojana has covered more than 80 crore people who were in need during the pandemic of covid-19.
